Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI)
The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) is a federal research agency under the Ministry of Science and Technology, tasked with developing and testing road and building materials for Nigeria’s construction industry.
History
- 1952: Established as the West African Building Research Institute in Accra, Ghana, by Ghanaian and Nigerian building professionals.
- 1978: Following Nigerian independence, Nigerian members formed NBRRI, while Ghanaian members founded the Building Research Institute of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Nation Building
- Advises government on building regulations and quality standards.
- May 2011: Federal government announced establishment of a Materials Testing Laboratory to prevent building collapses and serve as a research and training center for universities and industry.
Collaborations
- 2009 MOU: Partnered with Ghana’s Building Research Institute on materials research.
- June 2011: Teamed with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to construct 1,000 housing units per state, using NBRRI‑developed alternative building materials.
Achievements
- March 2011: Developed cement‑stabilized brick technology, offering a low‑cost, durable alternative to traditional bricks, reducing overall construction expenses.
