National Security Council (NSC) – Nigeria

The National Security Council (NSC) is an advisory body to the President of Nigeria, focused on matters of national security. Council meetings are held at the State House, Abuja, in the Council Chambers.

It was established in 1976 by the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo following a failed coup attempt by Buka Suka Dimka. The NSC, along with the National Defence Council, are the two principal security advisory bodies in Nigeria.

Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA)

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) functions under the Cabinet Office and serves as a coordinating body for Nigeria’s national security policies and strategies.

A major unit within ONSA is the Counter-Terrorism Centre, which is responsible for leading the implementation of the Policy Framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism in Nigeria.
