Moin-Moin (Moi-Moi, Olele)

Moin-Moin, also known as Moi-Moi or Olele (Yoruba: Mọ́yín-Mọyín, Ọ̀lẹ̀lẹ̀), is a steamed or boiled bean pudding made from a mixture of washed and peeled beans, onions, fresh red peppers, spices, and often fish, eggs, chicken, and/or crayfish.
It is a protein-rich Yoruba dish commonly eaten across Yorubaland and nearby regions in West Africa.


Preparation

  1. Base Ingredients

    • Soaked beans, ground into a fine paste.
    • Mixed with dried crayfish, vegetable oil, and seasonings.
    • Optional garnishes include sardines, corned beef, shredded chicken, or sliced boiled eggs.
  2. Shapes and Molds

    • Slanted pyramid shape: Traditionally formed using broad Ewe Eran (Thaumatococcus daniellii) or banana leaves, folded into a cone in the palm.
    • Cylindrical shape: Achieved using empty cans or foil molds.
    • Other shapes depend on the mold used before cooking.
  3. Cooking Method

    • Seasoned paste is poured into the chosen mold.
    • Steamed or boiled until firm.

Serving

Moin-Moin can be enjoyed:
- Alone as a snack
- With rice as a meal
- With ogi (pap), oatmeal, custard, salad, koko, or garri
