General Abdulsalami Abubakar
General Abdulsalami Abubakar became Head of State of Nigeria on 9 June 1998 following the death of General Sani Abacha.
Transition to Democracy
- Upon assuming power, Abubakar replaced or transferred most of the military administrators in Nigerian states.
- He instructed the new administrative team to prepare for a smooth transition to democracy by May 1999.
Post-Transition Reforms
- After the election of President Olusegun Obasanjo, all former military administrators were required to retire from the military in June 1999.
