Early Life
Michelle Alozie was born in La Jolla, California, to Nigerian parents, Godwin and Chioma Alozie, from Imo State, Nigeria. Raised in Apple Valley, California, with three siblings, she developed a strong connection to her Nigerian heritage, which later influenced her decision to represent Nigeria internationally. At Granite Hills High School, Alozie excelled in soccer and track, setting school records in the 100m and 200m dashes. She played club soccer for Legends FC, winning a national title in 2012. Alozie graduated from Yale University in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, earning academic honors and aspiring to become a cardiologist.
College Career
Alozie played for the Yale Bulldogs from 2015 to 2018, scoring 19 goals and recording 13 assists in 49 appearances. Her senior season was cut short by a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2018, which sidelined her for several months. She transferred to the University of Tennessee for her final year, playing 17 matches and scoring 3 goals for the Tennessee Volunteers in 2019. Her versatility and athleticism earned her All-Ivy League honors at Yale.
Club Career
BIIK Kazygurt (2020)
In January 2020, Alozie signed with BIIK Kazygurt, the Kazakhstani women's football champions. Her stint was brief, with no recorded appearances due to the season's cancellation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. She returned to California after three months of training.
Houston Dash (2021–present)
Alozie joined the Houston Dash as a preseason trialist in 2021, facilitated by her childhood friend Ally Prisock and assistant coach Twila Kilgore. She signed a national team replacement contract during the 2021 season and secured a full contract in August 2021. Alozie debuted in the NWSL on July 2, 2021, against OL Reign. In 2022, she scored a last-minute equalizer in a 2–2 draw against the Washington Spirit and made her first postseason start in the NWSL Playoffs. In 2023, she had a breakout season, scoring 4 goals in 17 appearances. However, her 2024 season was less productive, with no goals and one assist in 24 matches, partly due to positional inconsistency under coach Fran Alonso. In 2025, Alozie scored her first NWSL goal of the season on August 17 against Gotham FC, a stoppage-time game-winner, contributing to Houston’s unbeaten streak. As of November 2, 2024, she has made 79 appearances and scored 7 goals for the Dash. Alozie signed contract extensions in December 2022 and September 2024, securing her with the Dash through 2026, with an option for 2027.
International Career
Alozie debuted for Nigeria’s Super Falcons on June 10, 2021, in a friendly against Jamaica during the 2021 US Summer Series in Houston, invited by coach Randy Waldrum after one training session. She scored her first international goal against Portugal in the same tournament. Alozie played a key role in Nigeria’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign, starting all four matches as the team reached the Round of 16. At the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), she scored a stoppage-time goal against South Africa in the semifinals, securing a 2–1 victory and Nigeria’s place in the final. Nigeria won their 10th WAFCON title against Morocco on July 26, 2024, with Alozie starting in the 3–2 comeback victory. She also represented Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics, playing three matches. As of July 26, 2024, Alozie has 30 caps and 2 goals for Nigeria. She was named to the CAF Women’s Africa Best XI in 2023 and the FIFPRO CAF Women’s XI in 2024.
Cancer Research Work
In addition to her football career, Alozie works part-time as a cancer research technician at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, focusing on pediatric cancer research. Her work involves studying molecular pathways to improve treatments, aligning with her academic background in biology. Alozie has spoken about the challenges of balancing her dual careers, often working late hours in the lab after training. Her dedication to both fields has earned her widespread admiration, with fans and media highlighting her as a role model for pursuing excellence in sports and science.
Personal Life
Alozie is deeply connected to her Nigerian heritage, often sharing her pride in African culture through fashion and social media. She is reportedly single, despite past rumors of a relationship with Trey Phills. Alozie is an advocate for women’s sports and African representation in global football, collaborating with initiatives like TOGETHXR’s Snap the Gap on Snapchat to promote African style and culture. She is also known for her playful personality, as seen in her X post, “Yes nau, na cow I be 🐄😏.” Alozie resides in Houston, where she balances her professional commitments with community engagement.
