The Kaduna State College of Education is a state government higher education institution located in Gidan Waya, Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nigeria. It is affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University for its degree programmes. Alexander Kure became provost in 2018.
History
The college, initially named Advanced Teachers' College, Kafanchan, began formal classes on 30 March 1977 at its first campus in Manchock with 17 teaching staff and 186 students. It was supervised by the Kaduna State Ministry of Education under the government of Wing Commander Usman Jibril, with Paul Turton serving as the first Principal.
The first Governing Council was established in October 1978, chaired by Mallam Gwamna Awan, Chief of Kagoro.
In 1980, the Department of Technical and Commercial Education (now Business Education) was established on the second campus. The college ran a crash program allowing three batches of Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) students to graduate in two years, ending in June 1981.
That same year, the college gained autonomy and affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. By 1988, relocation to its permanent site at Gidan Waya began, with 80% completed as of recent years. The Technical and Fine and Applied Arts departments remain at the temporary Kafanchan site.
As of 2022, the college offered more than 29 NCE academic programs (15 fully accredited and 14 with interim accreditation) regulated by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). Student population has grown from 186 in 1977 to over 15,652 in 2022, including part-time students. Staff strength increased from 981 in 2016 to 1,084 in 2022.
