Chin Chin (Fried Snack)

Chin chin is a popular deep‑fried snack across Nigeria, also known as:
- Atchomon in Togo & Benin
- Achomo in Ghana
- Croquette or Chin Chin in Cameroon


Description

  • Texture: Crunchy, bite‑sized pieces
  • Shape: Typically 1 inch squares, ~¼ inch thick (can be cut into various shapes)
  • Variants:
    • May include cowpeas in the dough
    • Often flavored with ground nutmeg

Ingredients

  • Base Dough:
    • Wheat flour
    • Sugar
    • Butter (or margarine)
    • Milk
  • Optional Additions:
    • Eggs
    • Baking powder
    • Nutmeg or other spices

Preparation

  1. Mix flour, sugar, butter, milk (and any optional ingredients) into a firm dough.
  2. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  3. Roll out to ~¼ inch thickness.
  4. Cut into small squares or desired shapes.
  5. Deep‑fry in hot vegetable oil until golden brown.
  6. Drain on paper towels and cool before serving.
