Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) is a Federal Government Teaching Hospital located in Kano State, Nigeria. Formerly known as the Bayero University Teaching Hospital, AKTH is a major healthcare and training institution in Northern Nigeria. The current Chief Medical Director (CMD) is Prof. Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe.


Overview

AKTH performs three core functions:

  1. Training of medical students and resident doctors.
  2. Provision of specialist medical services to the public.
  3. Medical research to advance healthcare knowledge and practice.

It is affiliated with Bayero University, Kano, and plays a significant role in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. AKTH made history in 2002 by becoming the first government hospital in Nigeria to successfully perform a kidney transplant, under the leadership of Prof. Abdulhamid Isa Dutse.

Leadership

AKTH has been led by several distinguished medical professionals:

  • Prof. Sadiq Suleiman Wali – Gastroenterologist; first CMD of the hospital.
  • Prof. Abdulhamid Isa Dutse – Clinical hematologist and oncologist; CMD (2003–2011).
  • Prof. Aminu Zakari Muhammed – Histopathologist and former CMD.
  • Prof. Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe – Surgeon; current CMD since 2019.

Renovation and Expansion

  • The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) renovated the hospital's rehabilitation center and drug treatment facility.
  • In August 2024, a geriatrics ward was commissioned—the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria.

Partnerships

  • AKTH partnered with Universitätsmedizin Greifswald (UMG), Germany, and the National Blood Services Agency (NBSA) to enhance blood transfusion safety across Nigeria.
